One in every 4 middle age adults has weak bones

COMPANIES HAVE BEEN ACCUSED IN THOUSANDS OF LAWSUITS OVER THEIR ROLE IN THE NATION’S OPIOID CRISIS. Emily: OSTEOPOROSIS IS A DISEASE THAT IS A COMMON HEALTH CONCERN FOR OLDER WOMEN. ACCORDING TO A RECENT STUDY, ONE IN FOUR MIDDLE AGED ADULTS HAVE WEAK BONES. ABC 4’S MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT, SURAE CHINN REPORTS. Surae: CLEVELAND CLINIC’S DOCTOR ABLESON SAID PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE BONE LOSS BEGINS AT MIDDLE AGE. WE KNOW IT DOESN’T SUDDENLY COME AT 50. THE PRECURSORS FOR LOW BONE DENSITY AND OSTEOPOROSIS COME AT A MUCH YOUNGER AGE. WE KNOW WE’RE BUILDING BONE FROM CHILDHOOD THROUGH OUR — THE AGES OF 20-25. Surae: THE STUDY LOOKS AT NEARLY 200 MEN AND WOMEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 35-50. RESEARCHERS FOUND 25% OF PEOPLE STUDIED ALREADY HAD A PRECURSOR TO OSTEOPOROSIS, IN WHICH BONES BEGIN TO WEAKEN. DR. ABLESON SAYS PEOPLE WHO HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS, MAY NOT KNOW IT UNTIL THEY BREAK A BONE. HAVING OSTEOPOROSIS MAKES BONES SUSCEPTIBLE TO FRACTURE, ESPECIALLY IN THE HIPS AND SPINE. THOSE FRACTURES ARE NOT ONLY PAINFUL, BUT THEY CAN CREATE PROLONGED DISABILITY. MANY PEOPLE EVEN LOSE THEIR INDEPENDENCE AND MOVE INTO ASSISTED LIVING CARE AFTER A FRACTURE. DR. ABLESON SAYS LOW CALCIUM INTAKE, LITTLE EXERCISE CONTRIBUTES TO LOW BONE DENSITY. THE STUDY SHOWS US THE IMPORTANCE OF TENDING TO MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS WHILE WE’RE YOUNG. A MODIFIABLE RISK FACTOR IS SOMETHING YOU CAN TAKE CONTROL OVER LIKE DAIRY INTAKE, EXERCISING. NOT SMOKING OR DRINKING ALCOHOL TO EXCESS. AND MAKING SURE YOU MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. Surae: MEN DON’T ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR BONE HEALTH. BUT THEY CAN GET OSTEOPOROSIS, TOO. SHE RECOMMENDS EVERYONE HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THEIR PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR ABOUT BONE HEALTH
